Our ongoing love affair with Design Museum Denmark grew even warmer last Friday when we took home solid proof of the creative quality of our relationship. One award in the category Rebrand/Corporate Identity and one for Type Design. And to our delight, Design Museum Denmark took home an award for Best Design Client of the Year!
When we first met the museum in 2016, we were met with a museum bursting with creative energy and the ambition to transform a well-known Copenhagen institution into a Danish design destination. Ever since the museum changed its name from Kunstindustrimuseet (Museum of Industrial Arts) to Design Museum Denmark, it opened the gates to thousands of tourists who all of a sudden understood that design was on the menu in Bredgade.
We share design!
Urgent.Agency had the pleasure of re-branding the museum and creating a new visual identity that is both playful and serious at the same time. The museum is de facto the design memory of all of Denmark with a vast archive and unquestionable knowledge of all things design. We wanted the world to remember this, so under the new-found mantra of “we share design”, the museum embarked on their exciting journey to transform themselves from an object-based exhibition form towards a more active and inclusive narrative of design.
The missing link of Danish type history?
In the process of pinpointing the DNA of the museum, we came across a forgotten piece of history: in the museum archives Urgent.Agency partner Mads Quistgaard stumbled upon the original font “Flexibility” – created by Naur Klint, son of legendary Kaare Klint. The font was revived, carefully digitized and enhanced by Urgent.Agency. Apart from being a gratifying revival of an important piece of type history, it is now one of the key elements in the museum’s identity, signage, publications and merchandise – and we are excited to see it receive its over-due recognition.
We at Urgent.Agency can’t wait to see what the future has in store for our ongoing love affair with Denmark’s collective design memory!
