The diplomatic world in the traditional shape of embassies is changing. Consulates are being closed down, merged or placed under severe austerity measures. In collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Denmark, we have ventured to re-think the whole idea of an embassy.
The Swiss ambassador Benedict Wechsler represents a new kind of ambassador – the kind you find on a bicycle rushing through the streets of Copenhagen and not behind the desk at an embassy. Because in today’s political and social climate, it is as important as ever to renegotiate cultural and political networks – and to inspire openness and cultural exchange.
In close collaboration with the embassy, we have created a revolutionary concept: The Open Embassy! An open and accessible form of diplomacy, that puts dialogue and cultural exchange at the heart of diplomacy.
Art and design is the glue that binds the Open Embassy’s events. The ambassador’s home hosts art exhibitions, design and art events, salons and social gatherings.
Ambassador Wechsler goes everywhere on his Swiss Army bicycle, whether to see the Queen or regular people. Every other Friday, a Pop-up Embassy appears on an announced café. Photo: Swiss Embassy

It’s no longer sufficient to be discreet, observe, and write home. We need to look at diplomacy in a more new-school way
– Benedikt Wechsler, Ambassador
The identity of the Open Embassy embraces the best of expectations and traditional ideas of Switzerland but always in combination with unexpected diplomatic behaviour and events. We call it “Super Swiss”!
