Money has always been a way to place value on everything from objects and products to experiences and knowledge. Because of this, banknotes have become the world's most common and most conveyed fetish object over time. It is a piece of paper with unprecedented magic.
Challenge
The National Museum of Denmark wanted to create an exhibition that educated visitors and made them reflect on the concept of money. But how do you talk about the abstract notion of money and the almost intangible power of the banknote in a new and inspiring way?
Idea
The concept and design idea comes from the fascination with money; the lustful and shameful power it has over people. It's about the dream of getting our greedy little hands on as many small, dirty banknotes as humanly possible.
Solution
The bread, bacon, stack, brick, cheese or the green. Whatever you call it, the concept of money is universal. The exhibition is about money, so why not display banknotes in all their glory? The global fetish object forms the foundation of the exhibition's visual identity. When familiar objects are displayed and made the subject of reflection, we see them in a new light and experience them in a new way.
If you ask people on the street what it sounds like to hit the jackpot, most will probably say Ka-ching! The phrase is used in much of the world as an exclamation of joy at the prospect of scoring a lot of money. Typically unexpected, "easy" money without a big effort. In that way, it is a joyful but also a bit of a shameful sound – it is the sound of our desire for money.
With the exhibit KA-CHING!, the National Museum of Denmark will instantly speak to most age groups, demographic segments, and most of Copenhagen's international tourists. Also, the word itself, Ka-ching, is fun and something the audience will want to say straight away!
