How do you redesign a magazine to be contemporary yet rooted in tradition and heritage? We worked with Højskolebladet on revitalizing Denmark's oldest existing cultural magazine.
The Danish Højskole is an iconic Danish institution and part of our collective heritage. It has played an immense part in shaping many young men and women and is a continual proponent in our collective cultural formation. Højskolebladet is Denmark's oldest existing cultural magazine and strives not only to reflect significant debates, but also to be agenda-setting in the core areas of the Højskole. We made a redesign of the magazine, which both acknowledges the tradition of which Højskolebladet is a part and at the same time reflects the contemporary time it represents. In the redesign we drew inspiration from earlier editions of the magazine: developing a unique display typeface inspired by an old letter head, redesigning ancient typographic elements and ornaments and reusing antique illustrations. The magazine is set in the font Dia, capturing the spirit of the early grotesque typefaces in one family of letters. The color palette is fresh and modern and helps to position Højskolebladet as a magazine that signals debate and critique. By mixing history and modernity the redesign reflects Højskolebladets heritage while maintaining a contemporary look and feel.
Our outset for the redesign was a contemporary look and feel, while at the same time reflecting the tradition and heritage of the magazine. We wanted the design to emphasize that Højskolebladet is an editorially independent magazine and we wanted it to stand out from the many other magazines published by associations.
