As the Danish Architecture Center moved in to their new home in the remarkable BLOX building, we were asked to develop the wayfinding. We have aspired to create a truly user-friendly and aesthetic solution with minimal interventions.
In spring 2018, Danish Architecture Center were moving to their new home: the contested BLOX building designed by OMA, the acclaimed architectural office directed by Rem Koolhaas. Inspired by the vibrant clashes of the city the building mixes different program, including Danish Architecture Center (DAC), Danish Design Centre, a fitness centre, offices and private apartments. As the building is quite complex, there was an urgent need to bring orientation and clarity to the many visitors visiting DAC.
Together with the DAC design team we explored ways to create an intuitive and flexible wayfinding and an appropriate signage design. From the start we agreed to pursue a folio solution that would be simple, operational and easy to change according to development in visitor flows and operations.
In the design process we engaged in a thorough analysis of user journeys and main touch points, mapping how people would orient themselves in the building. As our design concept became clearer, we did substantial work on site, prototyping, testing and finetuning scale and placement of the signs.
Our concept is really mega graphic to a mega building – answering to the scale and power of BLOX, while still leaving the building as untouched as possible. As a supplement to the large, expressive signage, we created a second, subtler layer with additional, secondary information
