Common Clearings is a sensory art experience created through ordinary elements: colored fabric and notably: the wind and the sun. The work explores the rooftop as a space for collective reflection, play and simply being.
Common Clearings is created as a part of the Sinnesrausch (”Sensory high”) exhibition at the OÖ Kulturquartier in Linz 2019. The work consists of a physical installation and a book entitled “Common Clearings – a collection of texts on human fundamentals”.
The installation is formed by a metal structure and hanging fabrics with different densities and shapes, centered around a clearing. The fabrics are hung to create a multitude of spatial experiences, exploring thickness and openness, light and shadow, inside the structure measuring 6*4*27 meters. As a weird, artificial forest it offers both a grove, a more compact forest and a central clearing where the audience is invited to lie down.
The work is a response to the curatorial ambition of using the impressive roof as a place for artistic experimentation exploring the senses and the city. With this backdrop we wanted to explore the vision of a collective place for contemplation and reflection.
“We think it was interesting to bring in an interdisciplinary Nordic
design agency to our special arts event – and to see them create this ‘world’. It is a bit like an urban space up here, and cities and urban spaces are created in collaborations. It is important for us to make these types of experiments – and to work openly and interdisciplinary. And very gratifying when the result is so
successful.”
Martin Sturm – Director and artistic director at OK Center of Contemporary Art
With “Common Clearings” we have attempted to create a friendly, yet foreign world using ordinary elements: notably the colored fabric and the wind, defining a – very red – shared clearing.
“Our aim was to create an experience that is immediate and physical but also meditative where there is room to think and be together as a collective. A clearing in the middle of a world that many experience as extremely disturbing. The installation and texts point to the marvelous and amazing aspects of our world - and hopefully, it will remind people to take a little bit better care of it.”

The book is available in the installation. The collection of texts that relate to fundamentals we share: from the stars, the sun, and the sky to our closer world of the earth, with its weathers, landscapes, and cities. In different ways, the writers unfold the intricate wonders of the physical and social world, while some also address the radical change we face – and the urgency of taking action.
