Temporary Installations
When Carlsberg Brewery closed down its factory and moved its beer production to Fredericia, it offered up the opportunity for a new temporary urban zone, while plans for the new Carlsberg Byen neighbourhood were being finalized. In collaboration with Keinicke & Overgaard, Urgent.Agency produced two prize-winning temporary installations for the citizens of Copenhagen.
What does it take to put an unknown part of town in people’s minds? And how do you encourage more activity in a former industrial area? In conjunction with the architectural office Keinicke & Overgaard, Urgent.Agency (then as UiWE) designed temporary urban spaces in the new neighbourhood of Carlsberg. The project turns selected squares into characteristic and inviting places for visitors.
We co-designed two temporary installations: “Under the Pent Roof”, a unique, playful urban space with 3200 ropes, and a square, “Plads E”, that housed a café and places to hang out and play. The design helped give the neighbourhood a new identity – and enabled people to feel at home and be physically active.
The Carlsberg urban design has been presented at a variety of international exhibitions, including the 2010 Venice Biennale.
When passersby swing in the ropes, they get the experience of moving three-dimensionally in a distinctive space.
