How do we strengthen the Danish visual arts scene and the conditions for artistic development and production? Together with Bikubenfonden we have mapped and analysed challenges and opportunities for visual artists' development in Denmark – and developed strategies and new initiatives for advancing the Danish visual arts scene.
Bikubenfonden has a vision of strengthening the Danish visual arts scene and the conditions for artistic development and production. In the fall of 2016, Bikubenfonden initiated a study on artistic development with the aim of uncovering challenges in the Danish visual arts scene, as well as potentials and opportunities for advancing the field nationally and internationally. We worked closely with the foundation on exploring new ways of working with artist development in a Danish context. Based on interviews and dialogue with visual artists, industry professionals, organizations and arts foundations, we produced the publication “Kunstens Rammer – Nyskabelser af muligheder for kunstnerisk udvikling i Danmark”. The publication points to a number of areas of intervention and specific initiatives that can contribute to artistic development for visual artists in Denmark.
The analysis highlights three areas of intervention and five selected initiatives that creates better opportunities for artistic development among visual artists in Denmark. The report recommends a practical, holistic and long-term effort, paying close attention to current and future structural changes in the visual arts scene. Specifically, it recommends supporting initiatives related to studio and production facilities, knowledge sharing and cooperation, and financing and organization.
The analysis highlights a severe lack of studio and production facilities in Denmark and an opportunity to significantly improve artistic development by offering or improving production facilities. The report recommends:
establishing dynamic and flexible studio and production facilities promoting collaboration in spontaneous and long-term processes.
that the facilities have a social element and invites the public in, such as exhibition facilities or cafés.
that opportunities for synergy, learning and cross-fertilisation are fostered through interdisciplinary meetings and links to professional learning environments.
The analysis highlights the importance of strengthening residencies for Danish and international artists and curators - and the importance of supporting the dissemination of the visual arts practice. The report recommends:
that knowledge and experience exchanges among visual artists are strengthened through new formats for collaboration, networking and knowledge sharing.
prioritizing international relations through international exchange, ambitious artistic development programmes and residencies.
strengthening opportunities for professional development and education through increased vocational training, professional career counseling and mentoring.
The analysis highlights the need to cultivate new organizational and business models, in which artists and artistic skills are activated in new ways. The report recommends:
creating greater openness about requirements and criteria for funding and financing, thus creating better application processes that applicants may learn from.
that new trends in entrepreneurship are explored in order to test new business and financing models for artists' financial opportunities.
developing and testing formats that work with structured dogmas for production and collaboration.
Kunstens Rammer points to potentials for advancing the visual arts field. In Denmark there is a pertinent need for focal points and facilities for artistic development and professional guidance in the visual arts field. Simultaneously, there is a need to strengthen international relations – both to attract international artists to Denmark and to strengthen Danish visual artists’ opportunities abroad. The publication can be browsed below, and we hope that it may serve to inspire dialogue and cooperation on how to work together on strengthening the Danish visual arts scene nationally and internationally.
