If you think school is all about sitting still, you are mistaken. That’s old school. At least when it comes to Bellahøj School - a school renowned for championing movement and play and for giving its students the opportunity to learn, develop and strengthen their physical skills through play and sports.
1. Challenge
In connection with a major renovation and extension of Bellahøj School there was a need for a new wayfinding and environmental graphic concept that could improve the daily flow of student movement and create a true connection to the school.
2. Idea
We went to school, literally, and studied intensely in order to come up with the right wayfinding strategy and placement. The overall conceptual idea is to celebrate the school’s focus on physical activity by creating a dynamic and lively universe that refers directly to the patterns and shapes that are present at the school.
3. Solution
The concept is founded in the school’s dominant architectural characteristics and is therefore a natural extension of the building. Specifically in terms of colour tones and materials chosen.
We have created a distinct sign family consisting of pictograms, directional signage, orientation signage, pylon signage, entrance signage and environmental graphics - all of which are a natural progression of the schools philosophy of learning through and with movement.
We have created a pattern design engine that creates variations over lines and shapes that are commonly seen in relation to sports. They cover the classrooms glass sections as a decorative and elegant way of limiting the ability to look in or out and thereby supports the pupils’ need to concentrate on their schoolwork. For the youngest of the pupils (the non-readers) we added symbols to the environmental graphics that represent the activity available in the given area. For example music or board game rooms.
Entering the school and starting the day in the right way
The new pylon design provides all visitors with an instant overview of the school as well as an overarching entrance sign that lights up when it gets dark. The combination of readily available information and a welcoming atmosphere greets pupils and visitors alike and makes for the ever important friendly first impression of the day.
Typography
We have applied two different typefaces throughout the school. A striped display typeface that refers back to the schools prominent running tracks and logo. To ensure readability we have paired the display typeface with a modern sans serif and on top of this we have designed an inviting and accommodating series of pictograms based on the stripes from the logo and display typeface.
